The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything

One of our reading groups performed a spook-tacular reader's theater play for us today!

This play was adapted from a book we love:

Thank you to Gloriana's mom who came in and helped make props, practice, and organize the presentation!  These kids did fabulous!!

Today, Mrs. C's STAR block group put on a wonderful performance!

We were all so impressed with their fabulous fluency and their professionalism!

We had scaredy cats...

Zombies...

A dragon and a knight in shining armor...

and a witch and her broom!

What a great performance! We loved it!!

Photostory: Community Rules and Laws

Last week we finished our unit on rules and laws in our community.

To show what we learned, we worked with a partner to create a photostory telling about the rules and laws in our community!

First, we took a walk through the community and took pictures of rules and laws we saw.
Then, we uploaded our pictures to photostory and chose which rules and laws we wanted to share.
Finally, we were able to record our voices telling what the rules and laws in our community are!

Our photostories are posted on our school website.  Click on our pictures below to be linked back to the website where you can watch our photostories!

Writing Celebration!

As you know, we finished our first unit in writing!!

Today, we celebrated our hard work with our friends from the other 1st grade classrooms!

We sat in small groups and read our stories to each other, it was so much fun and their stories were fantastic!

Then we sang this song together:

Celebration! from Jackie Nelson on Vimeo.

And had donuts!!!

It was a wonderful way to celebrate our writing successes!

Wrapping Up Writing!

We have all been working so hard during our first writing unit! We have become experts at wiring personal narratives, or what we like to call, our small moment stories!

We learned the writing process, strategies for spelling, ways to bring our stories to life, and took examples from some mentor authors!

Now that we are finished with this unit, we will be celebrating with our favorite piece we wrote this Friday with the other 1st graders at Grant school!  You will get to see this amazing work at conferences (but we may give you a sneak peek sooner)!

Today, we are bringing home a green folder full of all our other small moment stories.  Check them out and see how much we've learned so far!

Fire Safety Week

To kick off fire safety week, we had very special guests at Grant Elementary....

The Lakewood Fire Department!

The talked to us about how to be safe and prevent fires in the kitchen, then...

they took us outside to see their firetruck!

We watched one of the brave firemen climb to the very top of the ladder!  It was so awesome! (and a little scary!)

Then we got to pose with our new friends in front of the truck!

It was such a great start to fire safety week!  Ask us how to prevent fires at home... we can tell you!

Spelling City

Looking for a new, fun way to practice reading and spelling our trick words?

We learned how to use this fun website in school today and we can continue to practice from home!

There is also a link on our classroom website to get here!

We need to be able to read AND spell all these words, so this is a great opportunity for practice!
