A "Roaring" Good Time With Officer Hayes

We finished our unit studying laws in our community this week!

Mrs. Chanter came in on Wednesday to help us use iMovie for the first time! We made trailers to show different laws and safety signs around our school. You can check them out here!

On Friday we had a very special visitor! Officer Hayes came in to tell us even more about safety and laws in our community!

He even brought us badges so we could all become junior police officers!

And we sang one of his favorite songs just for him!

Thanks for visiting Officer Hayes, we had such a fun day and we learned so much about the laws in our community and how to stay safe!

Even Pirates Follow the Rules

We've had a busy and fun last two weeks!

Last week we finished our unit on the rules of the school.  To wrap up everything we learned, we made videos to show the rules in the different locations in our school!

The first graders did all the writing, acting, and videography!
(Click on PLAYLIST in the top left corner of the video to choose a different rule video.)

We've been studying one of our favorite authors and illustrators, David Shannon!

We read so many of his books, and we loved them all!  We illustrated our favorite David Shannon character using the same tools he does: pens & paints!

You can see all of our Davids, Alices, Ferguses, Camillas, and Spencers!

Today, we celebrated Talk Like a Pirate Day!  We read Melinda Long's book Pirates Don't Change Diapers, which is illustrated by David Shannon, of course!

Then we all became pirate puppets!

Professional 1st Graders

We can't believe we just finished the 2nd week of school!  These kids are already acting like professional 1st graders!

We were so busy this week!  We practiced working with partners while reviewing our math skills, we increased our Read to Self stamina to 15 minutes, we celebrated Miss Nelson's birthday with a popsicle treat, and we continued to study James Dean and his Pete the Cat books!  We even ended the week by becoming Pete ourselves with headbands and an edible shirt with four groovy buttons!

Check out some highlights from our week:
